Pregnancy care visits, where the LPN collects weight, blood pressure and urine data and reports abnormal findings to the RN.
Most of the LPN’s work in a prenatal clinic is data collection at each visit: weight, blood pressure, fundal height, fetal heart tones, and a urine dipstick for protein and glucose. Recording these accurately matters because the value only means something against the client’s own trend across the pregnancy.
Know which findings cannot wait for the routine review. A blood pressure at or above 140/90, protein in the urine, sudden facial or hand swelling, a bad headache, or visual changes together point toward preeclampsia and go to the RN or provider straight away. So do vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, a fever, or a mother reporting that fetal movement has dropped off. Folic acid before conception and through early pregnancy prevents neural tube defects, which is why the LPN reinforces that teaching with any client who could become pregnant, not only those already expecting.
