Terms in this set
- Empathy Recognizing what a client feels and reflecting it back, as distinct from sympathy, which shifts the focus onto the nurse.
- Rapport The trust that makes a client willing to talk, built through consistency, honesty and unhurried attention.
- Grief The response to loss, which moves at its own pace; the LPN listens rather than rushing the client toward acceptance.
- Coping How a client handles stress; the LPN observes which strategies are working and reports the ones that are not.
- Anxiety Apprehension without a clear cause; stay with the client, keep the environment calm, and use short simple sentences.
- Crisis A situation that overwhelms a client’s usual coping; safety comes first, then a calm presence and a return to structure.
- Boundaries The professional line between caring for a client and befriending one, crossed by gifts, self-disclosure or contact outside work.
- Denial Refusing to accept a painful truth, a normal early defense that only needs intervention when it delays care.
