Sterilization

A process that destroys all microorganisms, including spores.

The exam rarely asks “what is sterilization” — it makes you decide which reprocessing level an item needs or spot a break in sterile technique. The tell is Spaulding’s classification: any critical item that enters sterile tissue or the vascular system (surgical instruments, implants, needles, cardiac and urinary catheters) demands sterilization, not high-level disinfection — that is the rule the keyed answer hinges on. Tested methods include the steam autoclave (the gold standard for heat-stable items), plus ethylene oxide or hydrogen-peroxide gas plasma for heat-sensitive ones.

The classic trap is treating sterilization and disinfection as interchangeable: even high-level disinfection does not reliably kill bacterial spores such as C. difficile and Bacillus, so it is wrong for anything entering a sterile cavity. A second trap is confusing surgical asepsis with medical asepsis (clean technique) — clean technique only reduces microbes and never produces sterility. Memory hook: sterile means spores gone and zero viable microbes; disinfected just means “cleaner,” not dead-clean.
