- Asepsis Keeping things free of germs; medical asepsis reduces organisms, surgical asepsis eliminates them entirely.
- Isolation Keeping an infectious client separate and wearing the barriers their precaution type requires.
- Precautions Standard precautions for every client, plus contact, droplet or airborne measures when the organism calls for them.
- Handwashing The single most effective way to stop infection spreading; soap and water is required for C. difficile and for visible soil.
- Restraints A last-resort device limiting movement; it requires a provider order, a time limit, and regular circulation and skin checks.
- Sterile Free of all microorganisms, including spores; the standard for invasive procedures.
- Falls The most common cause of injury in hospitals; bed low and locked, call light within reach, non-skid footwear.
- Quarantine Separating people who were exposed but are not yet sick, distinct from isolation, which applies to those already infected.
